Sunday, 10 August 2014 UNESCO Jakarta office participated as a partner in One Day Training on Capacity Building and Design Concept on Sustainable Eco-Tourism and Disaster Mitigation in PASIAD Foundation Building, South Jakarta. This training was organized by Yayasan Indonesia Tangguh (YIT), an Indonesian foundation, whose key founder is Luqman Abdurrahman. This seminar/training program was supported by the Euro Asia Foundation (PASIAD) and the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of the Jakarta Provincial Government. The main purpose of this training was to raise awareness on ecotourism, water management & disaster management and to have better preparation for ASEAN Community 2015. Forty five participants consist of Jakarta Tourism Ambassador (Abang None Jakarta), university students, and community leaders were attended this training. On behalf of UNESCO, Mr Shahbaz Khan presented a keynote paper on Sustainable Development, Eco Tourism and Disaster Management. Other presenters were Prof. Dr Sylviana Murni (Deputy Governor of Jakarta), Cemallatin Aydogan (Pasiad Foundation), Solano Palha (USA), Mr Usman (Masyarakat Peduli Ciliwung), Korea Indonesia Environmental Cooperation Center (KIECC), and BPBD.
In his presentation, Deputy Director of UNESCO, Mr Shahbaz Khan emphasized that the world was facing challenges to balance sustainable development involved social, economic, and environmental aspects. Mr Shahbaz stressed that we need to develop better understanding on the impact of global warming which has also have been happening in Indonesia, especially in Jakarta. These phenomena can be felt through increasing city temperatures, further complicated by the dark colored of rooftops of the building, and then causing micro climate change effect. He encouraged the training participants to reflect on their role as young generation and Jakarta tourism ambassador to develop technologies and innovation to address these challenges, and to ensure long term sustainability for Sustainable Development Goals Post 2015.
Mainstreaming of sustainable urban water management in Jakarta as an eco-city can lead to eco-tourism, Mr Shahbaz said. Since 2010, UNESCO has launched the Sustainable Water Management in Asian Cities (SWITCH-in-Asia) programme to develop new technologies to provide good water treatment and to improve public health through eco-hydrology method. On the other hand, UNESCO developed capacity building and awareness raising activities on disaster management titled Establishing Community based POIs in the High Risk Communities to Flooding in Pluit, North Jakarta. This programme is a part of UNESCO World Map Point of Interest (POI) and aims to raise sensitively of community on the concept and practice of DRR used training and mapping activities using open source software, OpenStreetMap and Photovoice methodology
